A SEA ETHIC

Whether or not we can see, hear, or feel the ocean from our own home territory, the ocean certainly feels all of us. And how our ocean is faring reflects how humanity is faring. In extending our collective sense of community beyond humanity and below the high tide line, we call for a Sea Ethic. Future generations can’t debate with us our treatment of the living world, or what we’re leaving for them. We see our ocean and our children in the same boat, on a mutually dependent, miraculous voyage of life. With our Sea Ethic program we aim to help people understand how the ocean supports all life on our planet. Through coast-to-coast lectures, media appearances, books, and published essays and articles, we work to reveal how everything humans do—both on land and at sea—affects the waters of our world. We are upon a critical moral challenge for maintaining life on earth. For many nature lovers, the ocean seems distant, vague. It now seems desirable that we should extend our sense of community below high tide — complementing the Land Ethic with a “Sea Ethic” — including all life on Earth in our concept of community.
“The ocean displays to us a dismissive, inscrutable exterior, all motion and mood, all mask and disguise, seemingly rolling on as always, its face silent about substance, its countenance mute on content, the extent of its wrinkles never varying over time. But don't underestimate her. Ninety-nine percent of Life's habitable volume is in the seas, and planet Earth would likely bear abundant and complex life if no emergent land existed. But without an ocean, this planet would merely spin unnamed three orbits from a star, its browned-out face as its own sterile moonscape. How do we begin to acknowledge a debt of such magnitude?” – Carl Safina, “A Sea Ethic: Floating the Ark”

EVERLANDS CONSERVATION ALLIANCE

EVERLANDS CONSERVATION ALLIANCE
Recognizing the importance of partnerships and collaboration in achieving meaningful conservation, The Everlands Conservation Initiative will build alliances with the World's leading Conservation Organizations. Collectively this network of conservation practitioners will:
Identify nominees for the Everlands Conservation Prize - Advance worthy conservation projects to support and emulate.
Help promote the interests of the Initiative at the regional and local level.
Challenge others to join Everlands in conserving nature.
Increase involvement of individuals, corporations, foundations, and government entities in conservation as a direct result of Everlands/ECF activities.
Utilize marketing and publicity to leverage its own efforts and financial commitment by challenging others to do the same.

EVERLANDS STEWARDSHIP

EVERLANDS STEWARDSHIP
"When the land does well for its owner, and the owner does well by his land --
when both end up better by reason of their partnership-- then we have conservation."
Aldo Leopold
In his classic 1949 book, A Sand County Almanac, Aldo Leopold called for a “Land Ethic” – an extension of our sense of community beyond humanity to include the whole living landscape. Inclusion, compassion, and stewardship were implicit in his idea.

GOALS OF THE INITIATIVES' STEWARDSHIP ARE TWO FOLD:
Collaborate with private land owners to ensure their properties maximize conservation and community values while maintaining highest level of owner use and enjoyment.
Assist landowners to engage in a wide range of conservation and community efforts on and around their properties.
A WORKING DEFINITION OF "STEWARDSHIP"
Stewardship is a commitment to conservation and responsible use.
It conveys the responsibility to manage land wisely in order to
leave a rich legacy for future generations and to conduct one's
activities with proper regard to the community at large.

Examples of the Initiative’s stewardship efforts include:
Conducting a “stewardship audit” of facilities, utilizing outside expertise as appropriate, to recommend constructive improvements and best practices to ensure properties provide maximum benefits to owners, the community, and the environment.
Establishing conservation easements on private lands.
Establishing “carbon zero” programs to offset property owner’s carbon impact.
Enhancing private land owners’ commitment to being “good neighbors” by actively collaborating with a wide range of partners to identify and support programs that enrich the community and its surrounding wildlands.

EVERLANDS CONSERVATION PRIZE

EVERLANDS CONSERVATION PRIZE
The Everlands Conservation Prize is awarded annually to individuals world-wide who have made extraordinary contributions to the conservation and stewardship of nature. Their actions sustain the land, conserve its natural resources, restore its air and water, and inspire others to take action. Their example is contagious and can be replicated across the landscape.
It is the intention of the Everlands Conservation Initiative to award an initial Conservation Prize of $500,000 in May 2009, $1 million in 2010, and an ultimate goal of awarding $1 million prizes for each of six global realms: Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, and Oceania (including Antarctica, Australia/Pacific Islands).
Winners of the Everlands Conservation Prize will receive a striking, original sculpture created expressly for Everlands by Zaha Hadid—the Iraqi-British deconstructionist architect whose “works are as mythical as they are real."

EVERLANDS CONSERVATION INITIATIVE

EVERLANDS CONSERVATION INITIATIVE
The Initiative endeavors to build good will through a commitment to open inquiry, fairness in business dealings, and our ongoing commitment to the conservation of nature. EVERLANDS CONSERVATION INITIATIVE

A Legacy for all Members and their Families.
Everlands Stewardship: Every Everlands property reflects the wildness of nature — and Everlands will keep them that way. Our ownership of these properties ensures that they will be protected, managed and maintained. In some cases, that will mean restoring wildlife habitats. In other instances, it means reforesting or river-keeping. In every case, it means preserving and protecting the lands for generations to come.
Environmental Affiliations: Everlands works with conservation pioneers and conservation leadership around the world to help protect threatened wild woods and wetlands, to restore wildlife habitats and to clean up polluted rivers, lakes, ponds and streams. Our conservation efforts deliver financial and human resources in support of ecological initiatives, not only on or near Everlands properties, but throughout the world, including: River restoratation in the Western United States - Removal of nets at the mouth of the great Atlantic Salmon river estuaries - Saving the Elkhorn Ranch-the birthplace of conservation in the United States.
The Everlands Conservation Prize: Everlands is the sponsor of the Everlands Conservation Prize, a $500,000 award given annually to one or more individuals around the world whose innovations, daring and creativity in conserving nature reflect our philosophy. The Prize is designed to build global awareness of how human stewardship makes a difference to the planet. As a self-sustaining Everlands legacy, members will be involved in nominating candidates and reviewing selected nominees.
